BIG SIBLINGS PROJECT

Big Sibs

The Project
Big Siblings volunteers are paired with the child of a lone parent, a child where there is a disabled member of the family, or with a child who has a disability. This project gives children a chance to get to know another adult outside the family, and gives both parent and child a break from each other. Volunteers enjoy the opportunity to meet people in a relaxed home environment, escape the pressures of University life for a while, and have the perfect excuse to enjoy childhood pleasures again.  Group activities are arranged, or you can take your little sib out to the local playground, go swimming, bike riding, walking, feeding the ducks, etc., or even just watch TV with them.

Time Commitment
Students usually meet their 'little sib' weekly during term-time, although graduates continue through the holidays (and are therefore much prized by parents and children!). Times and days can be flexible, however, reliability is crucial as children and parents get very upset if they are let down. Visits are usually 1-2 hours in length.

Other Information
You choose whether to be paired with a child with special needs or not.
Training: Distance learning and face to face training is provided - any special training for befriending a particular child is provided.
