Become a volunteer

Section 1

We need to know who you are, your contact details, and which years you’re in Cambridge. That way we can contact you regarding specific projects you may sign up in the future. This data also allows us to gather statistics which we use to find out which groups (college / course / demographic) need more targeted approach to raise SCA’s profile.

If you use any other e-mail address regularly, please put it here. This will help the SCA administration avoid situations in which they can\'t find any communication from you when they search for the first address you provided, because you were always e-mailing from the second one.
The year you are supposed to finish your degree. If you are not at uni, please write 0000
We are very unlikely to call you. Nonetheless we need your phone number if there\'s an emergency / there are last minute changes.

Section 2

We need to know which projects you’re interested in so that when we have specific vacancies, we can contact the people who explicitly wanted to help out.

Section 3

We need this information to safeguard our clients.

This will not necessarily affect your ability to volunteer with us.
In the UK there is possibility of being forbidden from working with children / vulnerable adults. Being on the Barred List is one of the criteria. In 2009 a Disqualification by association was introduced. In simple terms: if the applicant lives with someone who is disqualified, they are automatically disqualified themselves. Before applying for a job, they need to apply for an Exemption. If you are unsure about how to answer this, please contact us on mail@cambridgesca.org.uk or 01223 350 365

Section 4

We need the names and contact details of your referees to obtain references. This is so that we safeguard our clients. Your references will be contacted immediately upon the submission of this form. We will not contact them again unless they don’t provide a reference, or some of their replies need clarifying.

In projects where volunteers work with people who are particularly vulnerable, we have a duty to make every effort to ensure the safety and well-being of our clients.

We therefore need the names of TWO referees in positions of responsibility who have known you for at least one year and who we can write to for a character reference.

It is a very simple form and anyone with moderate English skills should be able to complete it without problems.

Suitable referees can include your tutor, former teachers, youth leaders, family friends, employers etc.

Referees CANNOT be a member of your family or peer group (your parent or flatmate is NOT a suitable referee!).

When you submit this form, the reference requests will be sent out automatically.

Newsletter

If you answer yes, your email address will also be stored in our newsletter database. You can unsubscribe at any point by clicking a link in the newsletter, or emailing mail@cambridgesca.org.uk. You will receive a newsletter on avergage once per week during term-time, up to once a month outside term-time, plus up to 10 per year to promote special events (children's parties, street collections, Steering Group recruitment).

If you decide not to get the newsletter, you will miss out on being up-to-date as to what volunteering opportunities are offered by SCA and local organisations.

Data Protection Act note:

The data collected in this form will only be used by SCA.
It will allow us to improve our services and be in touch as and if necessary.
You can request a removal from the database anytime by emailing mail@cambridgesca.org.uk.
By submitting the form, you agree to the terms and conditions outlined above.

How we store your data?

This data will be stored in encrypted spreadsheets. After you graduate or ask to be taken off our "active volunteers" spreadsheet, your information will be stored in a "past volunteers" encrypted spreadsheet. This is so that if you ask us for references we have record of you volunteering with us and we will be able to show that we followed safer recruitment procedures.
